Getting a Different Perspective

Youth First Texas is approaching the decade mark, and it’s about time for some minor cosmetic surgery, just to keep the appearance fresh. The facelift is coming thanks to the efforts of a group of youth who have taken to calling themselves the Queer Writers. The youth will be tackling a variety of informational outlets, from viral marketing and newsletters to editorials and profile pieces, under the watchful eye of YFT’s Director of Operations, Judith Dumont.
Judith expressed high hopes for the group, saying the experience would “enable youth to ‘try on’ real world professional work while also mentoring them to express themselves.” And when it came to involving youth in the process, Judith hoped it would “bring youth to the forefront on all of the activities and accomplishments we witness here at YFT.”
The members of the Queer Writers are similarly enthused. “I hope to bring everything I’ve learned so far,” said Victor Rodriguez. Athena Kincheloe added, “I hope to bring a different perspective on things, and institute even more student leadership at YFT.”
As for what they hope people will get out of the changes, members of the committee all voiced similar opinions. Athena hoped to share the fact that “YFT isn’t just for LGBT people, it’s also for allies.” Staff member Chelsea Mauzy added that she looked forward to YFT having a more active presence on MySpace and Facebook. Judith said that she believed “the donors, volunteers and board love hearing directly from the youth,” and that this was a great way for youth to “bring a different view on current events and center activities.”
Looking forward to what they would get out of the experience for themselves, the members of the Queer Writers shared similar viewpoints. For Athena, being a part of the committee gave her a place where she “can do one of the things I do best, write.” Victor said that it was a chance “to do something for this organization that means so much to me,” a sentiment echoed by the rest of the committee. And when it came to what Judith hoped the committee would get out of working together, she said “they will grow more confidence and ambition, believing who they are is magical and pertinent.”
