Educational Programming

Youth First Texas considers education a number one priority for everyone. Everyone needs the opportunity to become educated, and YFT finds it necessary to provide that as much as possible.

G.E.D. Prep Class:
YFT’s G.E.D. program is new and improved!!! YFT holds tutoring sessions for those who are interested in getting their G.E.D. Tutoring sessions focus on the five areas that the G.E.D. exam will test them: math, science, writing, reading, and history. Tutoring sessions are every Tuesday-Friday from 4:00pm-7:00pm (except for Thursday when sessions end at 6:00pm for Big Group). Tutors will be available everyday to students who wish to enroll in the program. Incentives are also given to students who come consistently to tutoring. At YouthFirst our goal is to make sure students learn the material they need to past the test in a effective manner.

Book Club:
The first Tuesday of the month is spent at Youth First discussing the latest and greatest book. Each month, a new novel is chosen by those participating in the Book Club and the novel is to be read by the next meeting. At the meetings, discussions of, “Did you like how sneaky this character was?” to “I can completely relate to him,” fill the Youth First center. Book Club is a great way to meet new people and perhaps read a book that you never thought you would enjoy.

GSA Network:
High schools and college campuses across the U.S. are filled with pride, tolerence, and equality. Some show it more than other through their Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). Students join together, both gay and straight alike, to fight the indifference and ignorance that runs rampant throughout society. Through GSAs, people find out about the best way to come out to their parents, where the best and safest gay areas are, and where to find support. YFT helps students form GSAs and keep them up and running with meetings, fundraisers, etc., all while still staying in the Independent School District’s guidelines.

Small Groups:
YFT has several small groups that increase academic and career opportunites including:
-Financial planning – How to make the most of your limited budget
-College prep – Where do I look for college? How do I fill out an application? How can I pay for college?
-Nutritionist – Eating smart and healthy
-HIV/AIDS – Everything you need to know about HIV/AIDS, how to avoid it, and what to do if you are diagnosed with it
-Resume workshops – What a hiring manager does and does not want to see on a resume
